ANXIETY COUNSELLING IN LIVERPOOL

Anxiety can affect your sleep, relationships, work and your ability to relax, whether it shows up as constant worry, panic attacks or health anxiety. I work with people in Liverpool, in person in Garston and online, to understand what is driving their anxiety and to build practical, lasting ways of managing it.

Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health difficulties people bring to therapy — and one of the most misunderstood. It isn't simply "worrying too much." Anxiety is the body's threat-response system firing when there's no immediate danger, and over time it can become the default state rather than the exception. This is why anxiety often feels physical as much as mental: racing heart, tight chest, disrupted sleep, restlessness, or a churning stomach are just as much a part of anxiety as anxious thoughts themselves.

Common Types of Anxiety I Work With

  • Generalised anxiety — persistent worry that's hard to switch off, often about multiple areas of life at once

  • Panic attacks and panic disorder — sudden, intense episodes of fear accompanied by physical symptoms

  • Social anxiety — fear of judgement or embarrassment in social or work situations

  • Health anxiety — persistent fear about illness or physical symptoms

  • Work-related anxiety — stress, pressure, or burnout tied specifically to your job

  • Anxiety linked to a specific event or life change — relationship breakdown, bereavement, redundancy, becoming a parent, and similar transitions

Signs Anxiety Might Be Affecting You

Anxiety doesn't always look like obvious panic. It can also show up as:

  • Difficulty switching off or relaxing, even during downtime

  • Overthinking decisions or replaying conversations

  • Avoiding situations, people, or responsibilities out of dread

  • Physical tension, fatigue, or sleep disruption with no clear medical cause

  • Irritability or feeling constantly "on edge"

  • A sense that something bad is about to happen, without a clear reason why

If several of these feel familiar, that's often a good sign it's worth talking to someone — not necessarily a sign that something is seriously wrong.

My Approach to Anxiety Therapy in Liverpool

Anxiety isn't only a thinking problem. When your nervous system stays on high alert, you can know you're safe and still feel your heart race or your chest tighten. That's why I don't rely on talking alone.

I work with you to understand what is keeping your anxiety going, which differs from person to person. Depending on what fits, that can include a steady, person-centred space to put words to what you're feeling, and trauma-informed, body-based approaches such as EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Brainspotting and Deep Brain Reorienting.

We go at a pace that feels manageable, and you don't need to know where to start. The aim is to understand the patterns behind your anxiety so it has less hold on you over time.

What to Expect From Sessions

Anxiety counselling typically starts with an initial session to understand what you're experiencing, when it began, and what's already been tried. From there, sessions are collaborative — we work at a pace that feels manageable, without pushing you into anything before you're ready. Many clients notice initial relief simply from having a space to name and understand what they're feeling; longer-term work then focuses on building tools and understanding to reduce anxiety's grip more permanently.

Sessions are available in person in Liverpool or online, on a schedule that works around you. You can read more about what to expect and session fees.

Your Anxiety Counsellor in Liverpool

I'm Chris Rudyard, an accredited counsellor and psychotherapist with over 20 years' experience, working in private practice in Garston, south Liverpool. My practice has been audited and passed by the BACP & NCPS, and I'm an accredited member of the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society. Alongside talking therapy, I work with trauma-informed and body-based approaches including EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Brainspotting and Deep Brain Reorienting, which can help when anxiety is held in the body as much as the mind.

You Don't Have to Wait Until It's "Bad Enough"

A common misconception is that therapy is only for severe anxiety. In practice, earlier support tends to be more effective — patterns are easier to shift before they've become deeply entrenched, and you don't need to hit a crisis point to justify seeking help.

Frequently Asked Questions About Anxiety Counselling

How do I know if I need anxiety counselling or if I should see my GP first?

Both are valid starting points. If you have physical symptoms you haven't had checked, it's sensible to speak to your GP first to rule out other causes. Counselling and medical support can also work alongside each other.

How many sessions will I need?

This varies significantly by person and by what's driving the anxiety. Some clients find a handful of sessions enough to build tools and clarity; others benefit from longer-term, ongoing work.

Do you offer online anxiety counselling as well as in-person?

Yes — sessions are available both in person in Liverpool and online, whichever suits you better.

Is what I say in sessions confidential?

Yes, sessions are fully confidential, in line with professional counselling standards.
