Is couples counselling right for us?
of stress as well as love. Working through problems together can ease frustration and that feeling of being stuck. Counselling gives you both the time and space to build something healthier and stronger. Both partners need to want to take part, as therapy doesn’t work if one person is being “dragged” along.
How couples counselling works with me
My sessions offer a private space where difficulties can be talked about openly. At home it’s easy to get distracted, let arguments escalate, or walk away from difficult issues. I’ll be challenging as well as understanding towards you both, and I may point out dynamics you aren’t aware of.
Common issues couples bring to counselling
-
Affairs and betrayals
-
Communication problems
-
Major life changes (moving, new baby, redundancy, retirement)
-
Illness or bereavement
-
Loss of intimacy or feeling disconnected
-
Deciding whether to stay together or separate
What if my partner won’t attend?
It can be hard to persuade a partner to come, and it’s important to respect their choice. If they’re adamant, coming on your own can still help you and the relationship. We all “rub off” on each other, so if one of you starts to make changes, the relationship is bound to be affected. Individual therapy can also help you recover from a difficult or abusive relationship.
What counselling is, and isn’t
I’m not here to change anyone, but to help you work through whatever is blocking you from each other. I’m also not here to keep relationships together at all costs. That decision belongs to the people in them.
