anxiety
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is a group of symptoms sometimes resulting from stressful experience/s. Symptoms can be related to thoughts, emotions, physical sensations or behaviours. Anxiety is a very normal feeling which has been pathologized by the 'medical model', and pharmaceutical companies.
As a therapist, I work with the underlying causes of anxiety. It is not that you shouldn't feel anxious, the anxiety you are feeling is a signal that your system is 'full' and you have been coping with too much, or there is some kind of inner conflict going on that needs attention.
Sometimes, people have dealt with so much, that the anxiety doesn't seem to shift, or there are high levels of anxiety a lot of the time. It makes little sense to try and get rid of anxiety feeling without working with the underlying causes. Anxiety is a signal that something isn't quite right for you and something may need to change. This is why I work with underlying causes or 'the roots' of anxiety. Sometimes, I find that people have pushed away, or not dealt with the root cause of anxiety for so long that they aren’t even sure what's causing the anxiety.
A lot of people just want a quick fix in the form of medication. I believe this only compounds the problem of anxiety for later on in life, resulting in people 'relapsing', feeling as if they are trapped forever with their anxiety.
Common signs & symptoms of anxiety might be:
'Checking' behaviours
Cold, sweaty, numb or tingling hands or feet
Dizziness
Dry mouth
Heart palpitations
Nausea
Not feeling able to feel calm or be still
Obsessions
Panic, fear, and dread
Picking
Sleeping difficulties
Shortness of breath
Sex problems
Tensions in the body/chest/muscles/back/neck
Worry
I worked for years at The Priory helping people recover from anxiety, so I know it can be done!
If you are looking for a counsellor or psychotherapist then you can book in to see me, and start to deal with what it is that is causing you to feel anxious and be free of the misery it causes you.
